The Easy Chair
Musings by J.P. Starrs
“My grandfather wrote a column for his hometown paper back in the 1930’s in Vermont. It was called “The Easy Chair- Musings by A.D. Flower”.
As I read his column every now and again throughout my life, (my mother gave me a photo copy from the old newspaper), there has always been something in the back of my mind about that endeavor that he made. I have enjoyed getting to know him at least a wee bit through the words he chose to put on paper.”
So begins a column I began for this website in 2001. You can read the whole column here.
I am excited to bring this column back. I suppose that had my grandfather lived in 2008, what he was doing would be called blogging. What I was doing in 2001 could have been called blogging, but that’s not what it was called back in the good old days, at least not popularly. I will re-post a few of my early attempts here.
My world in 2008 is phenomenally different from that of depression era New England. I would say the abilities we have to travel and communicate so easily would fill Grandfather with awe.
But some things haven’t changed. I love my family, my neighbors and my country just as he did. I have simple joys to absorb and complex problems to overcome. We still have easy chairs.
Life lessons and pleasures surround us each day, and we may all do well to look and say’ “What good did I receive, what good did I see, what good did I do today?”
I have found that all my pain and suffering goes away when I thank the heavens for the blessings that are mine each and every day of my life.
That is important.
That’s the view from The Easy Chair.

The Easy Chair is alive and well - YAHOO!!There are those in another world rejoicing that yesterday meets today and there are yet some things that never change. I rejoice with them and marvel that history is really today??!! Your children and grandchildren will look back and rejoice at what you do. Many thanks and God bless!
Congress has the “pork” and we have the “ham”.
I love it. Keep up the good work, John.
